Ok, the moment is finally here. This is the season one finale of Sons of Thunder.
I'm pumped. Are you?
If you haven't watched any of the series yet, you're missing out. Head on over to Pure Flix, get a membership and watch it!
Alright, let's keep this intro short and get right into it.
MEET THE CHARACTERS
Here are the Sons of Thunder characters talked about in this article.
THE OPENER
I was on the edge of my seat to start this episode as it opened up where we left off episode 6, with the Carver-forced fight between Lee and Simon.
Lee looks like he can pack a punch, but Simon is just too much for him.
After a couple pointless punches from Lee, Simon lets one go to Lee's stomach. And that's all she wrote.
Got to say, I'm pretty impressed with how Simon turned the other cheek as much as he could. I think after one hit, I'd probably see red and go off on Lee.
Fortunately, Carver had seen enough and broke it up before anything bad happened.
At this point, I'm wondering if Simon is ever going to see his bike again.
And I really, really want to see Carver go away.
GOD & MOTORCYCLES
The scene where Simon wakes up to find Lee's mom reading his Bible is an interesting one.
She brings up the passage of scripture about shaking the dust from your feet as a testimony.
Simon says he tried that, but he can't leave yet because of his motorcycle, which is being held hostage (again).
She asked him a simple, but important question:
"Well, who says God wants you to have a motorcycle?"
It's interesting that this motorcycle is causing all sorts of problems for Simon right now. It started with the lying in the last episode and now his unwillingness to let go is leading him down a darker path.
When the things you own end up owning you, you're bound to end up in places you didn't mean to go.
So, does God want Simon to have this motorcycle? Should he have just walked away?
I think God wants him to continue the journey and will provide, but it seems like He wanted Simon to just let go and trust Him to provide.
OUR OWN ADVICE
When Simon & Lee were forced to train, Simon starts talking to Lee about how Lee deserves better, but I kept thinking, "so do you Simon."
Simon was right, but he was kind of ignoring his own situation.
Sometimes I think God gives us words to speak to others that are really meant to convict us.
But just in case Simon missed this, he gets a dose of lecturing from Lee.
In the end Lee presses Carver for more money and to be freed from housing Simon. I'm not sure this is what Simon was getting about when he said Lee deserved more.
And bold-as-ever Carver tells Simon he's going to be in bondage for a long time.
Why doesn't Simon just walk away? (the motorcycle)
ENJOY THE SMALL THINGS
There's a great scene in this episode with Duster and Simon where they take a break to enjoy some PB & J sandwiches that Duster had brought.
I like this scene a lot because it's a nice break from the tension—also foreshadowing—and it really gives you a quick-but-understanding look into the heart of Duster, one of Carver's pawns.
I also like that the scene is so short—kind of meta if you think about it.
It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, high-paced grind of life that you miss out on simple, yet wonderful moments—like enjoying a sandwich with someone.
Even though both these men are currently in bondage, they still had a moment of peace and happiness.
And what a perfect opportunity to talk about Jesus.
THE DILEMMA
So it turns out the Devil's Hand has come to town as part of an underground fighting arrangement and Carver wants their guy to put Lee down for good.
When talking to Lee about it Simon learns that his motorcycle is in Lee's garage.
Ah, and here's the choice.
At this point Simon could just say "thanks and try not to die in the fight" and ride off in the sunset with his problem solved.
Or he could stick around, keep attempting to convince Lee and see where things go.
As Simon walks inside to say goodbye to Lee's mom you can tell he's conflicted about what to do.
Lee's mom, using the Bible, pretty much tells him that perhaps his job is done here and there's nothing more he can do.
Simon decides to get on his motorcycle and ride off. Is he leaving town? Does he have a different plan?
What would you do?
THE FIGHT
We've arrive at the pinnacle moment for Lee. This might be it for him.
To say he's outmatched in his fight is an understatement.
Seriously, he's 100lbs lighter and seemingly has no advantage over his opponent.
The guy he's fighting has the nickname "Fist of the Devil."
I mean, come on. Lee might as well be fighting Mike Tyson.
As we see money exchanging hands, I've got to wonder who is betting on Lee? And what are those odds like?
Is he getting 200-1 odds or something? Do these guys just not like money?
Watching the fight I just kept waiting for the "Rocky" moment, and sure enough, we got one.
So now you think all will be ok. Lee gets money he needs, Simon slips out the door and life easily rolls into season two.
Unfortunately for Lee, Carver bet against him and now wants to harm him.
THE FINALE
As the men start arguing over the outcome of Lee's fight, Ringo and crew spot Simon, who showed up just to watch Lee and leave.
With tensions at the breaking point, Lee pulls out a gun and demands money from Carver.
Of course Lee loses the gun when Carver slaps it out of his hand and all sorts of chaos ensues.
Figuring it's the end of his life, Simon commits himself to God's wil and awaits the sledgehammer from Ringo.
And surprise, surprise our seemingly lovable Duster shows up, picks up the gun on the ground and fires it into the air, which brings a moment of pause to the battle.
In the end Ringo makes a threat that when the club is his, nothing will protect Simon from "the Devil's reach."
You know, I was wondering if Simon, who was holding the only firearm, was going to just try to end matters there.
Wisely he said he's going to trust Jesus and he left.
And that's a season wrap.
Wow, what a finale. The future is setup with Ringo willing to spare nothing to bring harm to Simon.
THE FUTURE
I originally wrote the above article in 2020 as life was happening and finally got around to publishing it in June 2021.
In that time Sony has purchased Pure Flix and it looks like Sons of Thunder might not be coming back for season 2.
It's hard to tell as tv/movie making slowed to a crawl over the past 18 months.
I'm was very excited to see where Sons of Thunder went and I hope that we see a Sons of Thunder season 2 in 2022 (or so).
Only time wil tell ...
Did you enjoy the season? Are you excited for a possible next season?
